Throats

I’ve been into Throats for only a few weeks, seems like I missed the “cool” boat but so what? I wanted to interview them because they remind me of playing in DIY Hardcore bands when I was a little younger; they seem to have the right ‘get up and go’ attitude that is severely lacking these days. Plus live: they own. I Caught up with the singer Alex and it seems he was actually into my old band Stabbed In Autumn from back in the day, props! One last thing: Alex was ill when we did this so give him a break for his kind-of short answers…

Throats Interview / Shut Magazine / August 26th 2008

1. So what happened to the tour with Manatees and Year of the Man? Too much doom for you?

A: Our van broke down on our way to Portsmouth so we spent most of the week feeling gloomy writing songs for The_Network split back home.

2. Unlucky, so Alex (Holy Roar owner) is putting you guys out at the mo with Holy Roar - that label is crazy, seems its like the golden ticket in the UK but the rest of the country seems kind-of lacking in that department of enthusiasm for underground music, would you agree?

A: Yeah i would agree. Alex knows exactly what he is doing. Holy Roar has produced some amazing releases in the last few years and will continue to do so in the near future.

3. Whats the London 'scene' like for DIY shows compared to furtherafield do you think? I live in Leeds and because venues are pretty easy to book for cheap there are usually pretty ace shows on...

A: D.I.Y shows around the UK don't really differ that much in my eyes. Kids still go crazy for the same bands. It's all about hype these days. If people want to see a band play then people will put them on and in turn kids will pay money to see the bands.

4. Do you guys still buzz off new bands (if so who) in the similar field to you guys or do you kind-of play a show then go and listen to free-jazz or Detroit techno or something?

A: We all listen to different genres, if we didn't I feel our music would become stagnant and boring. I still hear new bands and think they are amazing and at the same time I listen to something completely different and refreshing.

5. I read you mentioning my old band in Plan B, Stabbed In Autumn, did we play Spalding together or something?
A: Actually loved that band. Your guys were literally one of my favourite bands when i was young. I saw you first when you supported Minus the Bear in Lincoln.
6. Ha ha, sweet! How did you upcoming split with the_network come about?

A: Alex hooked us up with the split. It is being released in the UK by Holy Roar and in the US by Black Market Activities.

7. Sweet, that’s pretty much it i guess - what are you up to for the rest of the day?
A: I’m sick in bed. I will be doing nothing.
