Trencher

Tour driver Stupid Jon keeps M.Shit in line somewhere in Europe..
It’s always nice to see a band who don’t feel the necessity to stick to the usual formula, be it the most twee of pop bands or the most brutal of metal bands. It’s even nicer than that to see bands who don’t have a fucking clue what the usual formula is and make music so mind twistingly ridiculous that watching them play generates a feeling akin to ODing on heroin. Trencher are one of these bands….
Started in 2000 by drummer Lock-Monger and bassist/Vocalist Pox, the two-piece created a sound so vile that they requested the services of Keyboardist/Vocalist M.Shit to ”put some keyboard lines over the top so that perhaps some sense could be made of the miasma”. Nowadays the Trencher experience is much like watching three usually mild mannered men explode after playing too much Castlevania and listening to too much Napalm Death; an ear splitting mix of grindcore & doom topped off with keyboard lines straight out of the world of 90’s Sega & Nintendo.
M.Shit explained further; “Our songs are influenced primarily by the desire to create something absurd” he says, “As for the lyrics, once again there’s the element of absurdity – I can’t speak for Pox and his lyrics, but mine are mostly concerned with uncertainty, indecision, paradox, drawn from personal experience but presented in an abstract, humorous kind of way (I hope)”. Seeing as you seem to fit into both the electro and metal genres, who is most accepting? “I find personally that the people who know less about the musical heritage that we come from actually tend to be the more open-minded about us, bizarrely enough. Either way, both crowds have their share of drug-fuelled sickos who like what we do.”

After a succession of split releases with UK bands such as Cutting pink with knives & The Phil Collins three, a well received debut album and hundreds of gigs under their belt, their new album ‘Lips’ on Southern records & recently well received tour with US fuckheads Daughters! has nodded towards bigger & better things for the band. “The Daughters! tour was very good fun. They’re a good bunch of lads, very down to earth, very unlike their wild stage personas” says M.Shit, “Lex (Daughters! vocalist) seems to like his water-sports, nudge nudge wink wink….Hull” he adds, relating to a particularly unsavoury event on Halloween in Hull, involving a member of Leeds band The Plight’s piss & said Daughters! vocalist.
So what does Mr. Shit himself think of the filth him and his bandmates create? “I read a review of Lips recently in which the guy described us as something along the lines of the sound of fairground rides buckling at the nuts and bolts and collapsing in a heap of twisted, burnt metal. I think I’m paraphrasing there, but I liked that one.”
