Harvey Milk (Interview)

Some bands gain ‘legendary’ status by writing anthems that can relate to an entire generation of people, who tour the arenas of the world year after year or just simply kill themselves. Others just kinda stumble unwittingly into it. Meet Harvey Milk. They’re the stumbling kind. But those in the know say ‘legendary’, albeit on a much smaller scale than usual.
Formed in Athens, Georgia in 1991; Harvey Milk (named after the first openly gay city supervisor of San Francisco) have released a number of extremely hard to find 7”s and albums, played a minimal amount of live shows (including none outside of the US), split up for 8 years and then got back together. And yet they are highly revered the world over as one of America’s most forward thinking extreme bands…
Shut - How has the HM experience changed since you re-formed? Older, wiser, more refined?
Kyle Spence (drums) - Certain things are easier now than they were 12 years ago. Getting shows, putting out records; pretty much the whole business side of things. Some things are harder to do than they used to be - getting excited and stuff like that. Writing new songs, practicing... it's hard to get motivated sometimes.
Shut - So you're touring with Oxbow, is that going to be a match made in hell?
Kyle - Hopefully. Creston (Spiers, Vocals/Guitar) and I have never met those dudes before but Stephen (Tanner, Guitar) and Joe (Preston, Bass/Legend in his own right) say they're cool so we've got that going for us, which is nice. Looking forward to it.
Shut – Eugene’s (Mr. Robinson, Oxbow vocalist) well hard, are you the type of dudes that start shit then let your big mate take the heat?
Kyle - We try not to physically exert ourselves too much, so fighting has never been an issue. We prefer to pungeon our adversaries instead (pungeon: to mentally truncheon).
Shut- How do you like the UK? Been before?
Kyle – Yeah, but not in Harvey Milk - these dates will be our first time out of the States as a band ever. As far as the UK goes, I guess it's alright if you like chips and deep fried pizza. Which I do. A lot.
Shut - When are you breaking up next?
Kyle - Couldn't tell you. Maybe when one of us dies. Or we just get bored with it.
